The month of January is named after the ancient god Janus, which the Romans worshiped. It was common in Roman culture to honor Janus by making promises to him at the beginning of the year. In medieval times, knights would also renew their commitment to virtue and chivalry by taking peacock vows after Christmas. These vows did not involve colorful birds with huge feathers, but are just another way to describe resolutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
