The summer solstice marks the longest day of the year. Of course, the actual length of the day depends on where you are in the world. And if you find yourself way up north inside the arctic circle, perhaps in Rovaniemi, Finland, the day is 24 hours long! The summer solstice is celebrated differently in different parts of the word. In some places the day marks an occasion of mischief and superstition, while in other places, the summer solstice gives an opportunity to reflect on past violent conflicts and to wish for a peaceful future. Different meanings in different places

The summer solstice always marks the longest day of the year, and it normally is on June 21st. However, the day itself takes on different meanings in different places and cultures.

In parts of Scandinavia and Finland, people make beautiful flower crowns to wear. This makes use of the vast amounts of wild flowers that are typically in bloom, and it also celebrates fertility. This customer is practiced by men and women alike of all ages.

Some midsummer customs take on a supernatural element. In parts of Finland, some people believe that placing birch twigs in certain parts of their home could guarantee fertility. Some folks even practiced a superstition to try and see their future spouse! To do this, they would walk outside at night and peer into a well naked!

In Northern Ireland, the summer solstice takes on an entirely different meaning. There, June 21st is called The Day of Private Reflection. It is taken as an opportunity for people to reflect on the violent domestic conflicts that have been a part of Northern Ireland’s history. People think back on the past and collectively imagine a peaceful future together. It is a relatively new holiday, having been celebrated only since 2007, but the message is an important one and here’s hoping that it is an important day of remembrance that is celebrated for centuries to come.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed either as we were awarded  the “Best Excess Inventory Liquidation Service – USA” award at the 9th annual award ceremony held by Global Brands Magazine.

Awards are nice, but our supplier partnerships serve a much more important purpose; obtaining a diverse product catalog that can be sold in our online auctions at far below retail prices, on average. In fact, we look at the partnerships with our suppliers as a true win-win-win scenario. Our suppliers win by being able to move large amounts of excess inventory without destroying the value of their brand. We win by having access to a variety of brands and their products from all around the world to fill our auctions win. And last but certainly not least, our customers win by being able to bid on and win these products that are often sold for a fraction of the suggested MSRP price.

A partnership that goes beyond savings

Perhaps the best part of our partnerships with the DealDash suppliers is that the benefit goes beyond a great deal. It is more important than that. For starters, we are motivated to help companies avoid having to discard and destroy unsold merchandise. The practice of destroying excess product is unfortunately all to common, and many brands have come under fire in recent years as videos showing luxury jackets being slashed or purses being burned go viral as they are shared online.

The reason brands resort to destroy items is to maintain pricing power. Imagine if a luxury purse company discounted last year’s bags at 50% off the normal MSRP price. Only the auction winner may purchase the item at the final auction price, everyone else has the option to purchase the item at the “Buy it Now” price, which is set at the MSRP unless otherwise agreed with the brand.

Traditional bidding sites create an awful customer experience
